    Whats your magnet of choice?

Tried to search for this but magnet yeilds a ton of results and after 30 min or so of looking through the results i decided to just start this thread. So if i overlooked the answers i apologize.

So i was just wandering what magnets yall prefer to use when testing for aluminum, stainless, etc. I had been using a plastic coated one that came out of a cabinet lock set "tot lock" that used the magnet to release the child lock. It was pretty strong and didnt flake apart like the ceramic magnets tend to do. So long story short i lost it somehow and need a new magnet.i did see that someone recomend a neodymium magnet and another the magnet out of a hard drive. any ways lets hear what you use.

I have no idea, just found it in the carnage of raising three kids, probably came out of a gumball type machine at the grocery store one day.

I like the telescoping magnets. I have several I got at Tractor Supply Company. Keep one in the truck, one on the iron work bench and one on the tractor fender.

I agree Mick they are nice. You can reach inside stuff and also handy for reaching in to pick up parts and such.

Mike the trick is to just start saving all your magnets! I have a theory on what happens to the ones we lose.
During the hustle and bustle of breaking down and separating our scrap the magnet clings on to a hunk of steel and thus scrapped and never to be seen again.

I keep one in the truck in the back of the truck on the bench a few above the bench along the front of the bench. Try not to get to close to the bench!

I have magnets all over the place! They are just so darn handy! For example. My lamp got knocked over,(don't ask) and the little threaded part broke off the shade bracket. I just used a small magnet and now the shade is easily adjusted to any position I want by moving the mag.

I also have a couple super strong magnets that are almost to big to mess with. These are not easy to come by! But you know the saying, "injunjoe's got a secret and he won't tell".

I also use mine to "sweep" the floor since I got a flat IN the garage from a little bolt. I'd like to get one of those that are around 48" wide.

Maybe you can get that roofers magnet for cheap after the EPA finds that old kettle he dumped!

You can tell us. We won't tell nobody. Promise....

I use magnets from microwaves, speakers, and a couple of the telescoping type. Got 1 big azz mag. that I have no idea where it came from. Use it for cleaning up the small stuff on the floor and work benches.

Plus they're a handy donut shape for tying string through so they're always to hand.
Big speaker magnets are excellent too - their tough metal outer protects the AlNiCo so they don't shatter like microwave magnets can.

I'm like joe...I have them everywhere...so many that my tools get stuck on them all the time. One in the truck...one on the bed, one in my watch pocket. My yard sells em for a dollar with their name on it. That's the one I keep in truck and pocket.

I also have several free magnets from speakers and microwave. I did however recently buy  a magnet from Harbor Freight that has a release on it. It's great for picking up nails, stuff from the shop floor, and sorting the magnetic out of the fastener bucket. It has the added bonus of being big enough to not get lost. $8.99

    On a productive note,

Hard drive magnets are great! They have a mount bracket already to go.

They will hold tools on one side yet are not magnetic on the other side. This is good for riveting onto a tool belt or in a tool pouch.
Tools stick to one side but the other as to not grabbing onto your truck and stuff.

Rusty that is a handy magnet! I like the back saver handle.

That'd be kinda counter productive in dealing with non-ferrous metals, wouldn't it?

I have a couple of old speaker magnets here and there. I like the fact that I can just stick one to the bed of the truck, near the talgate, so it's always handy when I'm putting stuff in, or taking it out at the yard.

If I remember right Kris Kringle, didn't you have a thread a while back about certain non-ferrous magnetic attraction?

I keep this stuck to my knife in my pocket so I always have it. Its for a name-tag, you put the magnet under your shirt and your name on the front. Its very strong for its size.

I get them free from my yard.
Be careful when keeping magnets in the pockets, they can easily de magnitize your debit cards/credit cards
    Rendering them useless
