CRT recycling- why its so hard to get rid of them

This may not be news to many of you but this article is interesting- big problems with stockpiled CRTs, the states may have to pay for disposal.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/19/us...gewanted=1&hpw
    from the article
"Recyclers say there is still money to be made on processing the old monitors and televisions if companies charge a price that more genuinely reflects the expense of disposing of the glass properly. But practices like “greenwashing,” whereby companies pretend to engage in environmentally responsible disposal practices, hinder such progress"

"Each one can include up to eight pounds of lead."

That sure is a lot of lead.

thanks for the link. I generally do maybe 6 a month, then take them to a "legitimate" recycling program...but it seems that the CRT tubes we feed into the various recycling programs may not actually be recycled...and there is no solution on the horizon.

I think I just picked up my last monitor!?!

so the hanford nucular site has had problems since it was opened. if we haulled all the glass there it would contain the radiation.
or we could use it in west VA as coal mine back fill. it's not likely that they would notice a increse in birth defects...

It sounds to me that we need to find a way of extracting the lead out of the crt's and we would have all the scrap we could handle.

The latest info I heard was that the places that process the leaded glass are getting behind.

You need to look at the leaded glass industry like this.

It's a declining market with limited resources. You cant open a factory to recycle leaded glass and expect to be in business for an extended period of time. The glass will one day dry up. Many people see this and done even want to make the investment.

We break down process seperate leaded from non-leaded glass. Once this is complete we then spelter the lead glass to extract and refine the lead to be sent back to market. Any questions feel free to check out website. ecs refining dot com.

They charge, he left that part out, lest last I looked at his buyer thread. If it changed it's the best kept secret on this forum. Heh.

We know we can pay to get rid of them, we want to be paid for them...like everything else. Yea yea..I know..wish in one hand, Dream in the other...haha.

I'll just keep hauling mine to Best Buy, local recycle drop off etc. Sure as hell beats paying to get rid of them.

I don't even want to get paid for them, I'd just like an R2 compliant place to drop them off and not have to pay for them!
