Not all TVs are the same. Let's make a list...

So you got a truck full of TVs. You're stoked to break them all down & grab all those copper degaussing cables, and those beautiful yokes that slip right off the tube, and the miscellaneous other goodies inside a television.

But you start breaking them down & learn that many of the degaussing cables are aluminum. And many of the yokes are bonded to the tube & won't budge.

This may be a task too large to bite off, but that's never stopped me before.

But what I'm looking to do is to put together as all-inclusive of a list as I can, of all the TV makes & models out there, & what the degaussing cables & yokes are like. That way, if you're sitting at a curb debating about whether to grab that TV & its hard-to-get-rid-of CRT, you'll be able to refer to the guide & know what you're taking/passing up.

So, tonight's 4 TVs:


Total and absolute leverite, this TV. Aluminum degaussing cable, bonded yoke. GRRR The only thing worth grabbing on this pile of junk was the 3x4x1/2 brick aluminum heatsink. Cut the cord & leverite where you find it.


Not much better. The yoke wasn't bonded but the cable was aluminum. Worth grabbing if you're hungry, I guess.


Best TV of the bunch. Decent length & thickness cable & easy-free yoke.


Pencil-thin & short copper degaussing cable, bonded yoke. Leverite.

If you can take pics, post them along with the info above, and I'll build an excel spreadsheet listing all the manufacturers & models along with specs regarding the degaussing cables & whether or not the yokes are bonded. Any other data we need?

Ok, I will toss in some stuff I've found:

#1: Obviously, the Sony Trintrons. Huge copper degaussing cable. ALWAYS pick these up.

(Sorry about what's on the screen, I just took a pic of the one in my house. I'm not trying to promote Bravo in anyway.)

#2: The very new Zeniths are very easy to strip. That is the only good thing about them. There is maybe ONE transformer aside from the flyback. The degaussing cable is not wrapped in tape but it's in a white rubbery plastic that makes it easy to pull the aluminum wires out of. All you have to do take your needle nose and pull the aluminum wire through the sleeve. Also, the yolk is covered in epoxy and is a pain to get the copper off the ferrite. The one I did is still sitting in a bucket somewhere in my garage, I don't want to mess with it.

#3 A lot of the newer CRT's have tiny little degaussing that takes forever to strip. You would be better off selling it as #1 insulated.

Old Zeniths and RCA then GE tv's are the worst ones id have to say. The Zeniths have way to many screws and RCA glue the yoke to the tube most of the time, same with the GE tvs. Sony tvs are cheaply built, same with there cpu moniters. When ya smash the yoke it unravels.

I just cut the cord and another scapper takes the rest . I rather do radios lol
