Probably no the greatest deal on monitors but....

Well, I picked up 3 old CRT monitors for $1 a piece....not the greatest deal I know, but the guy had them marked for $15 a piece haha, so it was hard to haggle much lower than that.

I assume Ill at least make my money back right? Plus the experience of doing it, because Ive never disassembled one before. Cant put a price on experience.

Ive read the various threads on how to disassemble them, so I think I have a good grasp on it. Just wanted to share, Im trying to get started doing e-scrap as sort of a hobby in addition to my full time job....stuff I can take apart while Im watching TV or what have you.

I believe my local goodwill accepts them for recycling, so I should be good on getting rid of the leftovers. If so, Im considering accepting them from people for a small fee.

I was pretty proud of myself, but I know Im not making a killing off them by any means.

Thanks, Ill definitely at least attempt to discharge them first.

I know theyve been sitting in the same spot since last Saturday, and a couple of them didnt even have power cords, so I assume theyre safe, but Ill still do it. They were at a storage unit garage sale last week and I just didnt bother since they were priced at 15. Then I stopped again this week and saw them there, had been doing a lot of research in between that time. Figured the worst they could say is no.

He actually did say no on one of them, there were 4. It was a little bigger/newer than the others.....Ill stop again next week if theyre having it haha.

Maybe a dumb question but I'm on rookie time still

How long will a charge last typically in a CRT Monitor?

Treat them like a firearm: its always loaded.

I think I heard its supposed to be about a month, but people claim to have been zapped by ones sitting longer than that

Discharge the monitors if need be, I never do because it is a waste of time wear gloves and use vise grips and wire cutters to break down the low grade, to get the transformers and aluminum off.

I just got breaking down some earlier, including low-grade power boards from various electronics.

I use "Tillman" Leather Gloves, they might be for welders, or hard working people like you and I. The Tillman gloves seem to hold up the longest against motherboard, and power boards. It will save your hands also to wear any type of gloves.

    Leather gloves recommended!

Here ya go! I got bored, but they have some really nice gloves on their website.

Usually if the TV/Monitor has been setting for a least a week then you should be good. I know Hoss just hates it when I link to this but there also is some explanation on grounding and discharging a TV. Sorry Hoss but it's for the greater good.
