Storage of TVS outside..Good or Bad...or Dangerous???

Hi all, Been collecting some TVS, mostly CRTs. and they have been sitting outside of my gargage for about 1 month or so. Some rain, some morning icy film, but that's about it.

Any danger of these exploding? While sitting?

Any danger of these exploding while transporting them to the scrap yard.?

Thanks in advance for your advice.......

    Carl

    They implode rather than explode.

Just use safety gear, face mask & glasses & gloves etc & snap the little 'tit' off thats under the circuit board on the rear end of the screen.
That'l let the air into the screen & from then on its Ok except for the normal 'handling glass' dangers.

Oh, don't pick them up 'face up' or 'face down' using only the metal band around the screen, as sometimes the band isn't tight & the screen will fall out.

If you can put up a video of one exploding.
Its really **** dangerous, unless you see one actually explode (implode - whatever) you have no idea of how dangerous it is.

Best senareo for videoing a exploding screen, grounds concrete for at least 10 foot radius around screen.
Screens sitting 'normal like' (horizontal) on the ground & open around the screen. Maybe taking the surround off around a old TV will work, just leaving the bare screen & its base.

Put up stuff around the TV so you can see the blast radius & what it does to things it hits.

Now, from the side, never in front of or behind, while wearing all the safety gear, thick jeans x 2, glasses & face mask, thick upper clothing with leather gloves, earmuffs.....
Get a hammer & tap solidly the side of the screen where the metal band is, 1/2 way up the band.

I'd be facing the other way, crouched down a bit, so the 1/2way mark of the bands behind my knees & same with the hammer, I wouldn't be looking at the screen at all.

Actually, I'd suggest a full face motorbike helmet.....

The thing'll explode with a huge 'Bombfff' & blow out forward & back, out forward you'd find finger sized glass shards for 6 feet.
There won't be much, but still some, glass coming out sideways because of the band.

I'd do it myself for you if I could video it. I have seen two explode before, you'd cr@p yourself if you didn't know it was gonna happen, not funny, you can easily loose your eyesight doing this.
Even the sounds loud, you can actually see the shockwave as it explodes.

On third thoughts, rig up a 10 foot + string with a rock on it, hanging down the side of the screen so the rocks gonna hit the band as before.

You don't want to be anywhere near it as it explodes.

Please do not smash the TV screens, it is very hazardous to the environment. If you insist on scrapping old TV's and monitors, keep the screens hole and have them recycled responsibly. There are companies out there that will recycle them and keep the toxic chemicals out of the environment. If you cannot do this, leave the TV's alone because the little bit of scrap you get from them isn't worth the devastation that is caused to the environment by disposing of them irresponsibly.

Here's the short version, E-waste must be properly contained and protected by a cover from exposure to the weather, if you feel that you need to know more contact your local by law enforcement officer. I suggest you make that call from a toll booth some distance away from your residence as anonymous.

Five page pdf file describes how a licensed recycle depot of e-waste was fined $21,000.00 for improper handling of CRT's.

I deal with a company out of New Jersy. They charge $10 per tube to recycle properly. So in turn I charge $15 for each tv or monitor that I take. When I get 150 tubes, I call the company and they come and take them.

Wow lucky you. I cant get anyone to even give me 5 to remove a tv let alone 15 lol. But on the other side of the token, I usually get some good stuff to scrap in exchange for removing the tv. Too bad I don't know where your at, I will be in Berwick tomorrow am. Bought some vending machines down there. You see a beat up Green Dakota pulling a Uhaul trailer with venders, then that was me. Wave...:>

^ He didn't need to use a sledgehammer, a small hammer tapped, like hitting a small nail, would explode that TV if the screen was hit on its side under the metal band.

Usually the people who call me to remove TV's have already called the landfill and garbage companies and got their rates. Compared to the price to dispose of them in our landfill my $15 is cheap.

Where ya picking those vending machines up at, just curious?

eesakiwi i appreciate how safety oriented you are, but dang. I've recycled thousands of tv's. I NEVER suit up in battle armor to tear one down. Simple common sense is all you need.

I've smashed my fair share of tubes in the past, when i didnt have any other way of recycling the tubes (not proud of what i did, but it is what it is). It's NOT as dangerous as you make it sound. And they do NOT "explode". They implode. You dont have to worry about shrapnel or what have you.

Sorry, readin' yer posts just made me chuckle a bit, had to say somethin'.

I have busted them at the yokes. Why would busting them at the band make them explode? What am I missing?
