I often see the problem of no title discussed.
Why would someone NOT have a title to their car unless there is still a lien on the car? With no title it seems like your really getting into a big grey area. Has anyone had a problem because they scrapped a car with no title? My knee jerk reaction is that if you don't have a title, you don't own the car to sell. What would stop someone from stealing a car and selling it to you?

How do you go about getting the derelict title? I'd be interested in finding out. I've stayed away from cars with no title because of liability. Be great to have another way to get paperwork! Thanks
Yo, fudge...I know the tow company my family works for currently, when they go for titles for abandoned vechicles, it's a matter of paperwork an dmv. I'm not expert but that's what they do. They seem to never have an issue either. Anyhow, here's some links for ya.

Actually, that's the only link I'm going to provide, the rest are all DMV specific to the state. Basically go in with your info, fill out forms, pay whatever fee you need, an get it on. Which is basically what the tow company does, for junk, salvage, abandoned, etc vehicles. It's been awhile since I've done it. ( I used to do the dmv run for them, now an then for extra money, many moons ago). Google up your state, an sure you'll find a link.

I am always looking for scrap: I was at a house recently where the people were moving that same day. There was a Toyota Corolla in the garage (not driveable). I asked them if they were taking the car behind their u-Haul. They said they just needed to get rid of it. They wanted $300.00. I offered $200.00 and they accepted. They had the title, but could not find the lien release for the original loan. I told them that the car just became worth $100.00. They said... "OK" I had the scrap yard pick it up the next day (No tow dolly yet)

I only deliver vehicles to one yard that requires no removal of fluids, gas tank or tires and they don't ask for a title (from me anyhow). I think that is because I'm in there eveyday and they trust. Their price is below unprepared shred by $10 a ton. Posted policy says they need a title for vehicles newer than 1990. Two other regional yards are too stringent for me. The cars I haul usually don't look like they'd be worth a leinholder's efforts to retrieve it anyhow. I've never bought a car and only haul for half the take. No quibbliing over price that way. Take two at a time and DON'T use straps as the DOT frowns on that (iron cuts the strap). That's how it works here.

DOT can be such a pain at times, but the no straps, does make sense.
