    Tandem Trucks

I'm not in the scrap business, but I have an opportunity to pick up several tandem garbage trucks very cheap. Macks and Freightliners mostly. Average age is about 1995-2000 and I would estimate most of them weight about 15 tons. They are all off the road for various reasons from broken frames to electrical problems.

I'm just looking for a few tips on how to go about turning these things around quickly and getting decent money out of them. Also general ideas on what the value range would be on something like this would help me decide it it is worth my while.

Since this is a scrap metal forum, we'll concentrate to scrap value. Call a local scrap yard for pricing but you're probably looking at about $85 per ton.

People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I've cut these type of trucks up and it can be very messy. Lots of oil everywhere.

2000 is still new for a commerical truck. If you know your stuff you can make money parting them out. You have to be able to determine if parts are good before you sell them.

Pulling the motor or interior parts shouldn't be that nasty. Now anything behind the cab is going to be nasty unless it's something attached to the exterior of the compactor.

Depending on the year and make the body is, the parts can fetch a lot of money. If it's a brand like New Way, Heil, Or McNeilus, the parts are desireable. Check out Asset Auctions.com, and look at the price for parts trucks.

I can't really haul them all to my yard because I don't have the space or time to get into that, but it sounds like it should be worth while picking up just a few and parting them out.

Yep, what Liberty said, stop by a truckstop and they usually have some trucking newspapers that have help wanted ad's and also places that buy big trucks/parts.
