    Cats from motorcycles?

I feel so wrong starting a thread about catalytic converters... but I can't find any info on this site nor on Google or EBay, though I may just be using the wrong search terms somehow.
Anyways, I may be helping a friend of the family clear out a house (yes, house) FILLED with motorcycle parts, tools, bikes in various stages of completeness, etc. Nearly all are Harleys. Her husband died not long ago and that was his thing, working on Harleys. Obviously, we'd like to sell the better condition items for more than scrap, but as far as I know selling used cats isn't kosher.
Do the catalytic converter pipes from harleys/bikes in general contain PMs comparable to cars and trucks? I know they have honeycombs, I just don't know if it's the good stuff or not. I'm guessing probably not, just because I can't find much about it... absolutely 0 scrap cats for motorcycles on ebay. Just a couple usable ones.
While I'm on the subject, what grade of stainless are the pipes and such made of, generally? Depends on make/model?
Thanks for any help on the subject.

OK I can't resist, I also have a 2000 Volvo v70 XC AWD wagon parts car. Haven't decided what I want to do with it yet... it's in really good external shape, just needs some money pumped into it to get it inspected. What's the going rate for original volvo cats? Please don't hurt me!

Im not big into motorcycles...but I dont think ive ever seen one with a cat...i know they have baffles to keep them quiet...unless you remove them or put straight pipes on...

In fact when I was a kid me and my dad put drag pipes on his 98 sportster...and I really dont remember cats comin off it...

There's about a dozen that look just like this 0585 Harley Touring Exhaust Header Pipe Two Into One Catalytic Converter Stock U | eBay

and about 2 dozen that look like this :
HARLEY-DAVIDSON RIGHT SIDE CATALYTIC MUFFLER ASSEMBLY (RIGHT SIDE ONLY) | eBay

Are these not actually "catalytic converters"? Forgive my ignorance, I'm just about completely clueless when it comes to motorcycles.

Here's a good pic of the honeycomb in these things :

From what I understand, cats in motorcycles are a relatively new thing and are because of the EPA and new regulations and such... I guess a lot of die hard bikers will actually remove the material to preserve the harley sound effect.

That's a new one on me. I know California is pretty strict on bikes but didn't know they had cats for them.

Well good, glad to have managed to make a somewhat unique thread on cats That explains why I can't find much info on them... I should probably look through all the mufflers, I just looked at a couple types and could just barely see the honeycomb inside. They were newer/shiner ones... the older ones may just be pipe.

Well, learm something new everyday. Are you sure they don't have more than scrap value? Possibly taking them to a HD dealer will help identify them. Harley parts usually have a nice resell market, even for stock parts. Like I said, my old man swapped his pipes and sold the stock ones, with scuffs, for right around $100 to an overseas buyer. Shipping was crazy but the guy paid it.

isn't there some kind of social or moral law that you have to have a memorial service before scrapping Harley parts ? Just askin.

Yeah I definitely don't intend to scrap the good stuff.. anything that might get scrapped would be things like old batteries, parts, and such that's just too banged up to sell. But as far as the mufflers with cats go, I was under the impression that selling used converters wasn't a good thing to do? Even illegal in some areas? I know I've seen a bunch of listings for cats saying they're not for re-use, period.. correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyways, if cats in motorcycles is a recent thing, then I'm guessing most of the stock are just pipes. I just looked at a couple of the shinier mint condition ones, that are probably nearly new (but definitely used at least a little).

Make sure they are cats and not the "spark arresters" the Govt. made them put on the bikes.

Yes, the cats on the newer bikes are what we call foil catalyst. I bought 70 pounds of these but my refiner said there not enough precious metals in them to be worth refining. So i am reselling them for double what i paid. Foil goes for $20 per pound in an extracted condition. Extracted ceramic honeycomb is going for $30 per pound right now.

    Wire, more commonly called foils.
