    Grumman step van Aluminum weight

    I was just wondering if anyone has scrapped out a Grumman Step Van and what percentage of the vehicle weight is aluminum?
    I have a Wonder Bread truck that I'm debating on selling or scrapping, if the aluminum weight is at least half the vehicle weight then I'll get allot more cutting it up and scrapping it than I will selling it.
    Any info would be helpful thanks.

    I dont know about the van you speak of but a 14 foot uhaul truck box and floor yielded 800 pounds of aluminum.

    I have scrapped a few fedex trucks depending on if it has shelves or not makes a huge difference. Last truck i scrapped weighed 10k and after it was all said and done i ended up with 2100 lbs of aluminum. On that truck the floor, shelves, bulkhead and rear door was aluminum. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the info the more I kick it around the more it's looking like a pile of scrap.
    I put a new exhaust and intake gasket in it a few days ago and got it running good and then I drove it a few blocks and
    discovered it was a POS...

    Ill give you a hint. Plasma cutter the bolts out of the floor pieces. Will go alot faster than trying to cut threw the floor or trying to remove all the bolts.

    Now you may wish you had kept more of the side panel on the drivers side. So how much weight have you removed so far? Are you serious about using it for your scrap truck. I might have prefered to have kept it intact so I could use it as a safe temporary storage and scrap vehicle. Mike.

    Did you get the engine and transmission?

    Those are a easy sale to many people

    I haven't scaled it yet but I'll give the total when it's done, this is as far as the scrap truck idea goes my F250 Super works good enough for now.
    I'm only a part time scrapper but the money I make doing it is a nice supplemental income especially during these troubled times.

    I got all the bolts holding the body to the frame removed today and then it started raining so I call it a day.

    I have those listed on CL that and the glass, wheels and tires and what ever else some one wants to buy off it.
    The motor runs pretty good after I put a new intake and exhaust manifold gasket in it and adjusted the carb and cleaned it.

    Here is your chance to get a cheap plasma cutter. The floor will pay for it. I spent the first 2 hours trying to cut the floor with a sawzall and got maybe 3 feet down one side. Barrowed a friends plasma and the floor was done in an afternoon. Ruined a tip but that wasnt to expensive.

    I probably have the brake booster you are looking for, zeall --- but your account isn't configured to receive a PM.

    EDIT --- Oh, and anyone who is thinking of scrapping out a stepvan, please let me know if it has a 4 cylinder Cummins diesel engine in it. I might be interested in buying the engine and transmission.

    EDIT #2 --- if you measure the distance of the box BEHIND the driver's seat and multiple by 100, then that's the weight of dirty aluminum you will have. Most guys will not take the time to separate the aluminum sheet from the aluminum extruded, so check with your scrapyard on their best price.
