    Question Vehicle weights

What do most people do to figure out the weights of the vehicles you are trying to junk? I made a program for my scrapyard for buying and keeping track of the scrap.. The other day I came across a government spec database so I figured out the data they were using and parsed it into a database for my program so you can lookup the vehicle right on your computer without googling it. I know there are many sites to find weights but would anyone find the program useful? If so tell me what you would like to see in it and I might build a standalone one and give it out free if anyone wants it. Right now it has year/make/model and it is capable of weights, heights, lengths, and some other specs like weight distribution front/rear. And I could put a spot to put in the price you get/pay so it will do the math for you. Just an idea let me hear your input.

I can't say anything about the vehicle part of the program, but just a program designed for buying and keeping track of scrap would be awesome. My options were a spreadsheet, or thousands of dollars for a commercial program (would cost more to track scrap than to buy it)

Since I am not a yard I don't deal. With cars unless I am flipping them really quickly. Would absolutely enjoy a program like that so I could get a better idea of what to pay and what to sell for.

I started with a spreadsheet but got sick of it so I made (still making.. Adding options and stuff as I see a need) one. When I looked they were like $30000 or so, which is too much in my eyes.

You are right, for here too. But it is easier to give a rough quote over the phone by just entering the info instead of making them find their paper work. I was constantly using google myself, so it may be of use to some.

here in AR i see alot of titles that say 4000lbs whether it be a geo metro or a 3/4ton van, never trust a title it will put you in the poor house if your not careful, the cube display that johnc4x4 uses is by far the best ive used so far, but as good as it is, ive had it be wrong twice in the last several months, but nothing is full proof

OK I see what you mean. I don't scrap cars but I know the wieght is on the title and you are right some time the clerks can put whatever wieght they think the car wieghs. Plus if your giving a quote over the phone and don't have the title in hand it would be better to know the wieght.

Good website, think its a tad light on the weights but I'd Rather it that way than heavy .
From my experience most weights given on titles, at least on Kansas, are pretty worthless.

here is a pic of the program i made for my business, like I said it is still in the making. I add options and so on as I need them.

notice the curb weight on the right, that is the thing I was asking if anyone would want. As you click year/make it narrows down the list of models. Search allows you to type anything like "bro" and it will bring up anything with bro in it. I just entered the info in for each customer to give an idea what it looks like for their receipt.

and yes my prices are down compared to all of you lucky people in the US.

I don't use a program or anything. After you scrap a lot of cars and work at a yard you can usually guess the weight of a car with maybe a 200lb margin for error

Agreed, but still a fun tool for those vehicles you almost never see, or if you are just starting out scrapping cars. That Hoegh cube is a nifty little program. I'm usually a good estimator as well, to the point now I can guess any woman's bra size without any margin of error!

It would be good to know what model catalytic convertor is on a car just by its body tags #

Then work out what its worth by looking it up on anither programme. Cats' are worth anything from. $10 to $1010
