    I'm with you man. I guess we all make our money off people in our "throw away society." Sometimes I have been lucky to sell one or two off before they suffer this fate.. I guess this one.. it just didn't work out this time!
    I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

    I haven't heard many people have luck parting out cars unless they are sport cars. I tell people I won't even mess with it unless it is a sports car or a truck, mainly trucks. I parted out a 97 Ram in 4 weeks, and had what was left off to scrap.

    Bought for $400, ended up with $1000 profit, a utility trailer, a 2 ton cherry picker I traded the rims for, new tires for my wife's XJ (Herman), and a bow I bought with the money from taking the rest to scrap.

    Umm. I can't believe this honestly.. but I have to Update this thread AGAIN. I gave up on the car yesterday- of having any chance of selling it whole- my plan was at lunch today to gut this sucker like a fish. I pulled down the CL ad for the car, and spent a bit of time last night pulling the rims/tires off of it and getting it ready to go to the yard.
    This morning at 10:37 I get a phone call. Guy says "Do you still have the car?" I thought "WTH? ad is gone, I'm gone, I'm all done with this thing.. wondering how he got my number?"

    So I said "I have it- it gets gutted at noon. Told him rims and tires are off, one wheel was a blankety blank and it busted 4 of 5 studs off. He said "I want it" so I tested him a little. I said- You'd have to come and meet me right away, I can't wait to finish this thing, it has to be done now" He hopped in his truck, met up with his dad.. they went to the bank, showed up with my asking price, helped me jack car back up to put rims back on- I gave them title and keys- they are on their way home to get a trailer to come back and do the swap.

    I'm STUNNED.. This is perfect.. I'll need to do more good deeds to replenish my Karma that just came back to me like gang busters!

    The Cavalier is SAVED, IT will RIDE AGAIN! YEEEEESSSSS!

    Sledge, I have a system to prevent a comeback like that which thwarts any more interest in a vehicle. This was purely unintentional but..............I was going to take my van to weigh-up so I started throwing junk in the back and then we had an issue with a new dog so I was locking him in the van at night to prevent him running off. He was fine for a few days but got sick of his new jail and completely chewed a panel off of a side door and started on the headliner. It wouldn't matter to the people who claim they want the van as they only want the engine but I still haven't heard from them.

    So you recycle steel toed boots huh? I wonder if there's a market for the lead in my pants.

    Want an added bonus? I had already cut the converter off and the battery was out because something inside was constantly "ticking" so I pulled it- they didn't even care! So now by my core buyers handy dandy Chart- the breadloaf pays $130 and another $12 on the battery.. on top of me clearing a tidy sum on the buy vs sell price.

    So after I got out of work my client and I went up to where his son's totaled car is, we did some pushing and moving of other cars in the yard-- in 7 inches of snow- but got that car out- so trailer was cleared for about 3 hours and now has an Escort ZX2 on it.

    Love these days!

    Had a day kinda like that. Went out to pick up a caravan. Alum rims. $280 cool, score. Get it to the shop. Drop off the truck, get in the car and drove home. walking up onto the deck I get a call. Guy has an f150. Cop pulled him over and yanked the plates. I said $300 bucks. Kinda low balled cause I was exhausted. And wasnt totally I the mood. "Sure man I just need it off the road" OK ill go...

    Sooo back in the car I get, up to the shop, fire up the rig and off I go. What a piece... was so bad when we finally took it in for scrap, the truck folded in on itself. Made a nice profit on the pair and we used the f150 as a lot truck/tire getter for almost a year. Was actually one of the more reliable vehicles on the lot LOL
    If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

    I saw that ad. I went so back and forth with it being "Sell it for parts" "Sell the whole car" I forgot about it honestly. Martinsville is about a 30 minute drive from me. It seemed when I ran an ad to part it out- everyone wanted the whole thing. So I pulled the ad I had from "Auto Parts by owner" and placed a new ad in "Autos for sale by owner" and then came the "Can I buy the radiator?" calls/texts. I was over it.. but it all worked out cherry! I appreciate the heads up though my man!

    Congratulations, Sledge. Glad you found a buyer, plus you got to keep some goodies. That is an unusually decent-looking Cavalier. I never seem to have any luck with parting out Cavs/Sunfires. I'll keep 'em for a week or so, then off to the crusher. Of course, the ones I get are usually beat, rusted apart underneath (good old PA road salt) and/or have bad engines. I'm getting ready to junk an 01 Cav with 214,000, and my last one before that was a 97 Sunfire at 186,000. I have never really cared for these cars personally, but they do seem to run forever.

    At least the 01 I just gutted still had the good X-Body Large Flow cat. The 97 Sunfire was missing its original 4-Dot, and had a tiny, junk aftermarket cat. It was snowy and sloppy the day I junked it, so I left that $6 piece of junk as a little bonus for the yard guys Being a core buyer, it kills me to ever leave a cat, but I just didn't feel like getting dripped on by icy slop for six bucks.

    Yeah.. I've had my share of vehicles that had the dreaded aftermarket. Got a BMW 325e once.. aftermarket..Grrrr. Yeah those sunfires and cavaliers have decent cats. I got a sunfire once with an X-Body.. real nice $160 payday on that one. I'm actually surprised how few of these I can get- this is my first cavalier ever. I think people aren't willing to give them up for the $200 they should go for. I had to pay $300 for this one, and it was a hard sell. Only reason I outlayed that much was because I was SURE I could re-sell it.. darn near ate my words.. until the 23rd hour!!

    I forked out $300 for this last one, too. Not a huge moneymaker, but with the good cat, alt, fairly new battery and a few other commonly-needed parts that I can use in my shop, it will be worthwhile. My towing buddy will give me $250 for the carcass to haul in, so I got all the goodies for 50 bucks and a little work.

    I'm pretty generous on pricing my junkers, usually because it's one of my customers' cars that bit the dirt and every little bit helps when you have to unexpectedly buy another vehicle. If I can help them out and still make a few bucks for me, all is good

    Yes sir. I have a bunch of parts up for sale off a recent Blazer and a Ford ZX2 I just got done gutting today. The ZX2 had an all but brand new AC pump as well as a brand new set of tires on it. Should do pretty well on it. I got the ZX2 on a 50/50 split with the owner. I haul and gut, part and core it out and get half without any upfront cost. So it'll work out nice in the end. His son wrecked the car in the front end so the bumper, bumper cover and pretty much all the front end was wiped clean, about 2 minutes with the sawzall I cut out the radiators and had a nice clear shot at the converter.. those ZX2's are a blankety blank to get off without the front end torn off- as I'm sure you know the top cut sits right under the manifold and doesn't give you a nice clear angle to make the cut. Thankful for the small things!

    Hey Aaron it's a little late, but on those it's easier to cut the bottom,then take an impact with an extension to where the converter bolts to the manifold,
    expect the worst and hope for the best

    That's a good idea on those manifold-mounted Ford cats. I usually just unbolt them from underneath with a long extension on the air gun and drop the whole pipe down, but they're still a pain. I do a lot of the newer Chrysler straight edge cats that way, too. The junkyards must agree, as I buy a lot of those Fords and the newer Straight Edge that still have the pipes and 4-bolt flanges attached.

    The absolute WORST cats I ever had to take off were on a newer VW Passat V6. It was a repair job, replacing both rusted-out downpipes with two cats on each. The fat little pre-cats that bolt to the manifolds are an awful nightmare to get out, and the new ones didn't go back in any easier. Five hours later, I swore to never do another one of them, but of course I will. Getting four good cats helps ease the aggravation.

As luck (Or Really good hinting and foresight) has it- I JUST got a nice IR Impact for Christmas, with full set of impacts and extensions so the next one I get- I'm going to give that a try instead.     Sledge, also you can use the impact (with around 2 feet of extensions) to get the bolts off of those chyslers at the top from the bottom, still cut the bottom with the saw. Use some good jack stands. I know you know by now those are some of the hardest to get

    What vehicles (Chrysler) are you referring too? I'd say these ZX2's have been the biggest pain in the rear converters I've tackled. The rest have come pretty easy. I may have not run into the ones you speak of. Can't say I have ever scrapped a Chrysler Anything.
