Mick brought up a very important point. Leaking batteries are considered hazardous waste by the DOT. Even my battery dealer guys have a special containment procedure for them. I will buy pretty much any automotive cores or scrap, but broken/leaking batteries are one of the few things that I expressly prohibit and will not transport. I just don't need to deal with anything the gov deems "hazardous waste".
