Aluminum rims- Yes
Steel Rims- Find a car to slap em on and haul in. Steel Rims alone- with the $3 or $4 disposal fee of the tire.. losing $ at that point!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

I just bought a manual tire changer from princess auto, 49 bucks. I've got a pile of AL rims with good tires that I don't want to cut.

I've got an outlet to dispose of my tires free of charge, there is a company locally that makes cow mats and other stuff out of them.

My yard charges $5 a tire. That adds up... so, a tire changer costing $100-$200 will save you money in the long run if you take in alot of cars. My dad owns his own shop so i just take them there

Man.. All you guys with the ability to get rid of your flat, dryrotted, crap tires FOR FREE are making me jealous! I have always hoped someone near here would open a facility to take the tires to truly recycle them (i.e. mulch, cow mats.. whatever) but apparently that has not come to fruition yet!

a few years ago when I started getting more into scrapping cars I could an "old" style tire machine for $300 (mainly just had dust on it as it was never used much since they bought all new machines just after buying this one when they went to stand ups)
AL rims - $14-20 each in scrap or sell as a set for more
steel rims - about $3 each
tires - anywhere from $10-50/tire if they are good
garbage tires go to the dump for free

We actually get PAID for scrap tires. 0.80 for passanger tires, and it goes up from there for truck and tracror tires.Originally Posted by sledge42

So are you able to do clean-ups on property or something of that nature? I know that people leave blown out tires on steel rims as much as they leave behind TV's- reason is the same. They know the disposal cost of the rest of the item after you take the metal is more than the metal $ they will get in return.
If you procure say 30 steel rims with tires on it- cut off the tires and turn in the rims.. you'll have 30 tires at say $90 bucks of disposal.. where you may get $50 off the steel on a good day. Unless you have a place to legally dispose of the tire for free. I'd say just leave them where they are. Since you don't have say vehicles you pull into scrap.. these are hard as heck to rid yourself of without more outlay of cash than it is worth.

Ok all you Canadians- will you please send your politicians and SMART folks to the U.S. to assist in implementing some change for us! Each one of you who either rid yourselves of tires for FREE or GET PAID are from Canada. Man sometimes this place really needs to get with the times.. They must be too worried about outlawing incandescent light bulbs to have any more brain capacity to deal with an even larger issue like tire disposal and recycling here!

Haha Sledge. I think im lucky with the resources i have. Im down here in the states and my local garbage company takes 2 tires every bulk pick up day which is every other month. But I come from a big family and most of my brothers live in the same village as I, so i just take my tires to their houses.

I guess I am lucky to have a used tire shop near me that will buy the tires if they have enough tread on them.

Well there are two outlets for certain. Good Tires- I'll pay the $3 bucks to have them popped off and re-sold. CL I can sell a pair of Good Tread tires for $40-$50 bucks easy
I think the OP's thoughts are about crap tires on rims.. I may be incorrect.. but I'm basing my advice off of the thought of a belt-showing, dry rotted, or shredded tire on a steel rim.

It'll change soon. The days of "double dipping" are coming to an end. They pretty well already have for scrappers. People used to charge to have vehicles removed, and then got paid for the car. Not anymore up here. Its the Same with tires. Right now you have to pay to have them removed, and whoever is recycling them is making a profit off them, cause we all know they scrap the steel coards and sell the rubber. One use they have up here is they use all the munched up tires to make playground bases instead of using asphalt. Its actually really cool and really strange to walk on lol

well my great grandfather was and contractor and a farmer and since he died in 94 (i was born in 99) stuff has collected in the 120 ft shed/his old lumber yard and the old horse barn is now full of junk and the contracter shop is full so im pretty well set up

We have a couple of huge "burn piles" we generate on the farm each year from clearing and a few tires accidentally find their way to the bottom of each pile. The fires get lit up a bit after the first snow and the mysterious rings of steel wire that appear in the ashes get dumped in with the shred.

Hey Sledge I was in the same boat until last year, our county had a recycling day in the spring where they accepted pretty much everything, including tires, free of charge! Since then I have seen a number of citys/townships also offering the same thing. Call up your county or township and see if they have anything like that going on, chances are your paying for it if they do so you might as well take advantage of it!

some places here still charge $5 a tire, but the city dump takes them for free.
It use to be that you always had to pay to get rid of tires and people were dumping them on the side of the road or in wooded areas so to try and prevent the government started a program so the city dumps started taking them for free as long as that was all you were taking in at the time.
there are some places that will pay .50/tire or a bit more but there are non that I have found close enough to me to make it worth wile. They also make rubber mulch from tires now too, I have some around our above ground pool.

Where I am at.. My County Does have 1 day a year where they will take tires- for free- your limit is 4 qty for free and $5 after that
Also the Dump here will ONLY take them if they have been Quartered. That is a ton of work to quarter say 100 tires or so.
Believe me I've tried every angle I can to rid myself of tires.
