Hello

I have been saving my money up for a while for the purpose of purchasing a car trailer or wrecker truck.

Looking for ideas for the route I want to go.

I'm interested in seeing how you guys have your winch rigged to your trailer. Is it super difficult to get a auto with four flat tires up on a trailer?

Is a wrecker truck a must have for squeezing into little backyards where autos often go to die?

Has a old car stuck in the muck damaged your trailer or winch from trying to pull it out?

Thanks just looking for idea. Pictures work best for my simple mind

18 ft trailer with a small dovetail on the back. 12k winch with wireless remote from Harbor Freight has pulled anything onto the trailer so far and cost about $340 with remote (comes w/ wired remote but I recommend the extra $40 for wireless). Winch, battery and all rigging is stashed in the tool box.

I have a 2 car trailer >> about 25 foot from tongue to back, able to get 2 on as the first lifts up over the 2nd
I also use the Harbor Freight Bandlands winch and it has pulled anything and EVERYTHING I have ever went to pickup >> I have NEVER had to leave something behind!
I like the solid deck so when you are dragging on old stuff with parts hanging down , nothing for it to get caught on

I am able to get into some pretty tight spots >> Practice backing up when you first get your trailer. And go SLOW >> then you have time to correct if needed

NOPE!!
Like I said >> I get them all >> If VERY heavy and stuck in the mud >> I use a snatch block >> Doubles the pull capacity but also cuts speed in half

I have a Take 3. Very first haul was a hay wagon/stacker on the tail end of a farm cleanup. I don't have a pic of it.

Checking fluids. Probably could've closed it before getting sidetracked for a photo. Eh, it's what I do.

The first auto hauling rig I used was a chain through a pipe. This required two drivers, but if the brakes did not work or my sons were driving the tow vehicle it could not hit my truck. Sorry no pictures.

This is a picture of my second rig which attached to the bumper of the pull vehicle and sat on the ball of the towing vehicle. Tires had to hold air with both of these set ups.

Evolved into a dove tail gooseneck flatbed. The winch is used on a variety of vehicles so it is mounted to fit a receiver hitch.

Newest trailer and winch. Loaded are a home made wagon, rock sled, and snow sled for my Persians.

I'm long removed from the car hauling side.. but here are a few pics of my trailer when I was haulin em in! This was a "Jersey Brand" 16' with no dovetail.

Here are some of the pics of the winch box. Welder did a STELLAR job making this "fit like a glove"

Tube for ramps to slide wherever they needed and steel winch cable to smoothly roll-up without tearing up the decking of the trailer (You can see how the boards were getting chewed at that point, the tube was set slightly higher now in order to stave that chewing off)

Before I was done I had upgraded to a Factor 55 ProLink and 3/4" Crosby Screw Pin Anchor Shackle which made it stronger than any other set-up out there on my J-Hooks.

Last but not least: Re-moveable Fenders. Only hauled like 2 cars with them and then sold the trailer. I miss that hunk of old iron these days!

Borrow away. I actually had fun working to figure some of these things out. As they say "kept me out of the bars." I was lucky I had two guys who did welding for me that were top notch. I wish I could have done the welding myself.. but I'm big on paying for someone's talent and know my own limitations. I had a love/hate relationship with that trailer. I spent a lot of time and $$$ on that sucka.. but I was proud of it. I made it mine. When the steel market took a dump and the uncertainty of recovery, coupled with moving into the e-waste side instead. The old girl had done her job and done it well. These days she is working for a local contractor hauling bobcats around somewhere in Indianapolis!

When I'm out and about I always look for her.. thus far I have yet to see her again.

For heavier hauling, has anyone considered one of the 5 ton army surplus wreckers? (M816, M936, etc). Medium wrecker, off-road capeable...

I'm guessing this was used back in the days when cars had real bumpers. Interesting.

nothing special just an 2012 18 foot electric tilt hull trailer with a warn 10,000 winch on it.

but its a 4 banger toyota tacoma with 5x10 trailer. I have to chop cars in two if i want them to fit.
