    looking for a trailer hitch...

I know this is a long shot, but I gotta try.

Im looking for a hitch for my car. Its a 1991 Honda Civic DX hatchback. I cant find a used one online, and dont really want to pay $130 for one...

I have the perfect trailer sitting behind my garage...but no way to haul it...

I have several in new condition taken off my old scrapped equipment. I need the measurements at the rear of the frame, fro out side to out side. the distance from the bottom of the frame to where it will clear the bumper. (the drop) and the distance from where you will mount the frame to the tip of where the ball fits.

I've got a nice Reese hitch I'm trying to sell but how much would it cost to ship it to WI?

And idaho, i found one for like 85 on ebay with 35 shipping, but its in my area code so im thinking i may be able to pick it up. And im lookin for cheaper lol...if my auto bone yard up here had one i could get it for 20...but they dont have one lol

Dont go for too cheap. Not all cheap things are good...just a few!

    Class 1...gonna need a 1 1/4" stinger.

Do you have a trailer plug or wiring leading to the rear? If not you'll need to figure out something there.

How set are you on making this car a tow rig? Might be better to find a $500 beater truck that has a hitch and tow lights.

In my opinion, you get what you pay for when it comes to hitches. Remember, your safety, your families safety and the safety of the people on the road with you are riding on that trailer hitch. I have seen hitches break and trailers go flying across the road and wind up in the woods. Wouldn't want to be in the way of an out of control trailer.

Now with that being said a class one hitch will handle 2,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight. I wouldn't pull 2,000 lbs with a Honda Civic, you will tear the transmission up on it and the brakes are not rated for that kind of weight. Once or twice probably wouldn't hurt it, but continuous use will tear that car apart.

My suggestion is to look for a cheap truck, preferably full size. We can get them around here for under $1,500 and can handle the wear and tear scrapping puts on a vehicle. Use your Civic as a scout vehicle and use the truck for the heavy hauling.

Good luck in what ever you decide.

Idaho, by stinger do you mean receiver? I have pleanty of those, and pleanty of different size balls. As for a plug in, no, i dont have a direct plug, but i have pleanty of witing harnesses that splice right into the cars harness, just cut, strip, crimp, and shazam!

CM, i understand the concern. We had a big issue up here not too long ago, an idiot was pulling a trailer 75 mph down the highway with no chains. Trailer came off, went through the ditch, and into a girls car, killing her.

Im not trying to pull a mobil home or anything. The trailer i have is the smallest street legal one you can get grom harbor freight. My brother brought it and some other stuff to my house when he got foreclosed on, and hasnt come back for it. He has a bigger trailer qnd a Tahoe, so this thing is useless to him.

Honestly guys, I cant afford a 500 truck. The 500 i had got pulled from my account today to pay my rent, my internets past due, along with electric. I just want to be able to pick up a larger appliance here and there, and I always have access to a larger trailer and my parents suv, but i cant ask them for it everytime i want to pick something up. My neighbor has a utility trailer by our garage, and im always welcome to use it, but its homemade and over 40 mph pulls like crap.

I can understand where your coming from. As long as you understand the risks of using your car to pull the trailer then go for it.

Contact your local U-Haul company and see how much their hitches are, they can install them along with the light kits.

You can also go to Wal-Mart and get them reasonably priced, install it yourself.

Try putting a wanted ad on Craigs List for one, you may find one.

Looks like a few guys on here had some, so hopefully one of them would work for you.

I know that new prices may seem like a little much, especially when every penny is accounted for with bills, but save up for it. Put a percentage of your scrap money up until you can afford one. The piece of mind alone knowing that you have a quality piece of equipment is worth the extra money. Sounds like after you get one you will have the ability to take more scrap in at one time, which will mean more money, so the investment is well worth it.

    Good luck

Heck if you know how to weld just build one yourself. I put one on the back of my 5th wheel to tow my boat behind it. I made it from 2x4 1/8th thick steel channel. Seems to work very well.
