Please help idendtify this vintage / super old... 15" plastic hard drive disc??

Not sure if this counts as electronics recycling, as this item has very little metal on it and one GIANT platter inside. I'm not finding any identifying marks on it. I can find information that IBM had some things that looked like this a long time ago, but I haven't found any photos that are exactly like this.

It doesn't look worth scrapping, but I am pretty sure it has value to a collector. As always, any help is appreciated!

Looks like an old magnetic drive. Cant recall the exact name but they were mounted like a reel to reel tape player. The machines were the size of a refrigerator. I remember as a kid going to work with my dad and he would let me change them out when a job finished running. I am sure Flimits will know what it is. Try sending her a pm to take a look. I agree with bear it may have more value to a collector than as scrap. Nice find...maybe where ever you aquired that the machine it goes to may still be around in a basement somewhere.

It looks a lot like an IBM 2310 or 2315 removable cartridge drive. It has a 14" (!!) oxide-coated aluminum platter inside.

    Here's a pic:

I think there IS actually one there, but the building was built around it! It's in a shed on this farm and the guy put what I think might be the computer and a drive for this thing, one cabinet is the size of my kitchen table and the other is the size of my washing machine... but there is no way to remove it unless it gets disassembled.

So... I'm waiting on an answer to whether or not I can spend my weekend there taking it apart?!!

If I ran across one of these it would be one of those 'pinch me' moments! I love old gear like that, and it would have a happy home in the 'museum'!

Congratulations on the find, and I hope you get your weekend!

You get that job, I'll come out an shoot photos for you. Good time watching Red break down a super computer, topped with stopping by an bugging Auminer, an then swinging by an picking Wayne's brain on hot shotting.

I'm hoping you get the job. I'd have one fun week.

Now that's just a silly question. You know better Red.

One it's Texas, two the cooler always comes. If there isn't enough room, the dogs or wife have to stay at home.

Sirscrapalot - Good thing she can't read my posts or I'd be in trouble.

Watch out Red, Hal is coming for you!

Sirscrapalot - It's called "Daisy". [sings while slowing down] Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do. I'm half crazy, all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage. I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two...- HAL

If there is a way to get it out whole, I will give it my best shot. Would take at least 4 people to lift one part of it, and I think there are 3 parts there. Problem is, they literally built the shed around it and it won't fit through the door. This guy sold off his land and is trying to be out by the end of the week. He already has some yahoos running around with bulldozers and a wrecker destroying his 10 acres(!!) and 25 years(!!) of hoarding scrap. I am buying truckloads of stuff off him at a time, but his "helpers" killed a lot of stuff before I arrived. And before anyone yells at me, the metal, vehicles, and most of the large equipment is already under contract.

If he's going to demo the shed, I can rip out a wall and get some folks together to get that computer out. If not, it has to come out in pieces or it's getting dozed. Problem is he can't make up his mind what to do with it the shed, and that computer OLD and DUSTY and really hard to judge the condition. I'll try to get some pics but I really wish you were here FLimits, because I could use your help!! I have to follow this older guy around and listen to his rambles and if I'm not right no his heels he gets really paranoid. Took me 6.5 hours yesterday of helping him move stuff before I could get away with the truckload I bought. So it has been a REAL exercise in patience.

Every time I think we're done, he pulls out something else I've never seen before and asks me if I want it. His prices are cheap, I'm really just paying him in help and conversation. So I'll let you know about this super computer... thing!

Just teasing you, Red. HAL 9000 knows you're a friend.

If you want me to see if there's anybody in your area who could go over to the site with you and try to help you figure out what the computer stuff is, send me a PM.

    Your project sounds exciting. Congratulations!

I'd say bring a helper or two, so you can talk to the guy and as he walks away, direct them to hump and dump and get stuff loaded.
If he asks, say "they're the backs not the brains, they wouldn't understand the value of our conversation." Just my doubloon.
