Newbie Help needed.

Best bet is to call around to some different yards and tell them what you have. I'm sure they come across a lot of old roofing/gutter materials and have an idea what you are talking about. Should bring better than shred, but how much better I dont know.

Some people burn the tar off. Just like they burn the insulation off of wiring. I don't suggest you doing that because it is illegal to burn wiring in most states if not all states.

Depending on how much tar is on the copper sheeting a yard might buy it like insulated wire. That is what I would do if you brought it to me.

I don't know about burning tar, per se, but burning the insulation off wire is illegal in both the US and Canada. Don't know about other nations.

Probably worth it to cut centers out where there is no tar?i have to pickup truck loads of this i dont think burning would be acceptable in my location.

How about freezing it? Just a suggestion. Oh, then after you freeze it; you can beat the tar out of it! :cool:

I would use an elec. heat gun to get the most tar & roofing off the edge. Then fan fold the valley so all the tar edges are together. Then soak the tar edge in mineral spirits over night and the tar should just melt away. Does use gas!
I had a few balisters that the copper wire was all gummed up with tar and mineral spirits cleaned it up really nice.

going to try the mineral spirits, though i dont know if its practical with the amount of copper i have to clean, also i was thinking of using a torch or heatgun to soften up tar. thxs

I used to get a bunch of that. My father inlaw does industrial kitchen cleaning. Hoods,fans , stoves, deep dryers, etc. He uses a chemical called grease cutter, very powerfully stuff but safe for environment. I spray it on the tar, let it sit for 5 mins, most of it disappears and what doesn't I pressure wash it off. And it makes the copper look brand new. If you know anybody in that field of work see if you can score some. It also works on any wire you might come across that "already has been burned" it cleans it up like it was stripped.

Call the yard and check on pricing before you spend time and money cleaning it. Copper sheet or #2 copper I'm guessing, depending on what kind of mood there in.
