Tore down a PBX today.

Should have taken pics for you guys, but I tore down a Nortel PBX system today. Picked it up between 11-1, and by 7pm, with a few breaks, it was done. I have an hours worth of work on the last component for the morning.

My thoughts? The boards, while overall nice....were not as good as expected. I do conduct plenty of eBay auctions, but this load is geting shipped with no cherry picking. Tough month. 65lbs of boards. However....at least 200lbs cast Al.

I still have A LOT of wire to cut down to connectors, but overall....the two hours I spent sweating in a telecom room (with the AC turned off!!) and the 6 hours spent tearing down will pay decent when the payout hits my account,

The Cast was a PITA to unload today. OmniSource wanted a letter from the company I got it from releasing it to me, and weren't interested in my business card. Not like I am unknown to them, I am on a friendly first name basis with the buyers. Business is business I guess....and I didn't feel like screwing around unloading my truck and arranging to pick up a permission slip, so I took it out of Marion County where the law is a little more lenient. Got .38¢ lb instead of .45¢, but the $20 difference was worth unloading the truck one time and not bugging my connection for something on corporate letterhead. Omnisource missed out on some sweet sweet clean heavy cast, as far as I am concerned.

The PBX ended up being 235lbs of cast. Less than 100 lbs steel in it. Probably 10-15 lbs wire (mainly crappy ribbon) and close to 10lb of gold connector ends. Haven't weighed the backplanes yet, but they look sweet.

Wow. Now they want proof of ownership on cast aluminum? This is getting ridiculous.

I believe it was the system that garnered their concern, not necessarily the individual components.

Enoch, it's a good idea to pick up a letterhead while you're at the pickup, especially for higher dollar, business, or gov't owned equipment, never can tell when you'll run into a check somewhere, best to have something showing you have rightful possession.
I've never had any problem when asking for something showing that I am in lawful possession, even on free pickups. They'll usually go type something up right with their company letterhead. I've picked up gov't equipment many times, across 2 or 3 states travel, and was always cautious about traveling with a truckload of computers that all had "Property of US Govenment" on em ; )

Yeah, I would have had no problem grabbing one that day, but this is a steady pickup, and I wouldn't want to hassle them for a letter for every piece of equipment. In retrospect, I probably should have gotten one for this particular item, but in the back of my mind I knew that if I ran into any static I could easily cross the county line and do business with no problem.

Marion County, home of Indianapolis, has its own ordinances governing scrap buyers due to the greater theft issues they have faced in the past half decade. To sell any scrap, every transaction must be photographed (me and the metal), my ID (must be valid and current) is photographed, and the license plate # of the vehicle I bring the scrap in is recorded. Every transaction, every time.

Or, I can head 15 miles up I-69 to a very nice yard that has my info on file. I just tell them my name, they look me up, and thats that. Sometimes they are better on some prices, this time they were a little worse.

Omnisource is one of the most strict scrapyard which is a good thing for keeping the crackheads out but there is a lot of hassle. I found a converter once that someone had cut and they told me that I need the title from the vehicle it came off.

I have the same problem here with proof of ownership for selling copper/aluminum AC coils. I had a pile waist high. Most of which I got from work. I was able to get a letter from the maintenance manager on company letterhead saying that all of that was mine rightfully. The letter was good for 3 months of bringing in rads. Even when I don't work there anymore, I will be able to go back to him and get that letter again.

It just sucks that thieves mess stuff up for the rest of us.
