Is this petty of me

My yard as I have mentioned has become very strict. And now I see different deductions have always been applied based on the overall weight of your load - for fridges (due to insulation ) dishwasher (due to plastic body) Metal doors with foam inside , VCR's , Other stuff ...
Now I don't mind the deductions as thats fare BUT I see that the weight reduction has been actually unfair, but for a wile I was not catching on
say i bring them a dishwasher that weighs 50 pounds well they took off 45 - A 40 pound door took off 40 . Now I see that since i have been including these items with my normal load I was actually getting ZERO pay . I questioned the situation and was told you need to weigh those items separate if you don't want a yard man reduction . I said your on the spot reductions caused those items to be ZERO . His answer: weigh separate . Well I know when not to continue the debate as I will not win. Any way what a pain , like what do I have to do now weight one 50 pound washer to get my official .5 or .6 per LB
The reason I see it has all along been sneaky is if i bring in a small load comprising of these items then i see no deductions are made as clearly they do want the stuff but there is no juicy weight to hide the deductions.
Am I wrong to think they should make honest on the spot reductions even I have gotten to a point i can pick up a item and know the weight by feel The yards must know the weight of all items backwards and forwards
You may ask how come I finally discovered this, It's because now it's a computerized bill (in you face with the real number) in the past there scratch sheet would say a reduction but you never saw it on bill with the exception for moisture reductions .

I would look around for other buyers. The yard sounds pretty petty to me, not you.

So, this may sound bad, but what if you "hid" the item? Obviously hard to do with a fridge carcass or a dishwasher, but a door? Just pile stuff on top of it...As far as I know no yards around me do deductions like that...

The only way i could see taking reductions is if they are paying 20 cents a pound for tin.

Find a new yard. Even traveling 10-20 miles more will make up for it.

Still will use them, but when the weight is good I wont push for that last item that usually is the door or some thing like it . These days they watch each unload from all customers. Bottom line for me is $10 gas is my guideline I put in ten and then I have to always try to exceed $10 profit in my searches no matter if it's a hunt or a trip to the yard - $10 is serious to me so yesterday they hit me with $11.46 reduction from a nice load . thats like taking away a trip to and from . I think I am going to have a talk with them cause if they like 97% of what i sell don't get greedy I need that $10 for you the yard

I'm with drozenski. You work too hard to get screwed! Yards buy Sheet at such low prices BECAUSE of all the extra crap built into them that would not warrant your time to disassemble the item. Currently at .12 cents a lb here.. I'll be ****ed if I'm going to strip a fridge for 2 hours to make $5 bucks! The good news is if you bail on the yard.. soon others will too- the yard will either come to its senses or go out of business.. in either case I'd say it is a win-win for scrappers in your area!

If you and others continue to go- they will think it is OK to keep on with their "business practices" Best way to stop it- is to not go and give them your hard earned scrap and take it elsewhere!

I just saw this: "moisture reductions" WTF? No way in h-e- double hockey sticks would I ever grace the front gates of any yard who tried to pull that. See now I'm all worked up. This place sounds like a joke.. a VERY BAD JOKE!

Yeah.... the day my yard gives me a "moisture reduction", I'll give them my own moisture reduction right on top of the shred pile! LOL

I have a feeling your yard will add a "air reduction" for the weight of the air inside of your scrap (fridges, dishwashers, washing machines, etc.) They also may add a "Non-ferrous" reduction for all of the non-ferrous that might be inside your shred load. Now how greedy does that sound! If I were you, I would find a new yard if that is an option. There is a reason that it's called "Shred." I feel bad for you man!

im with gravitar, they dont deduct forr the copper wiring and motors in appliances but they do for plastic and insulation, makes no sense to me, find another yard

i would find another yard there is one yard i hate dealing with and have let them known why after sandy they had more metal then they knew what to do with guess what they wish i was there now

has anything happened up until this point to get these deductions, because it sounds like all BS deductions, what is your relationship with your yard, meaning the guys that unload you, the guys and gals at the pay window, or the crane operator unloading your shred or even the main manager? how do you talk to them now and in the past even facial expressions, everything you do once you get on their yard determines the prices you get, and the deductions you get or the ones that get overlooked. my point is ask them what you can do for them to make it easier on them, there are lots of things you can do to make yourself memorable to them in a good way, figure out what works for you and things will change, i ALMOST guarantee it

cory i like you but i don"t see that in his favor sometimes yards just feel the need to treat EVERYONE like crackheads i deal with 5 yards and refuse to deal with 1 the one i tried to deal with was the closest but they don"t want to play ball.

No choices of yards , Donuts wont help.It's not personal they look to do this all day long . They have walkie talkies and its -silver truck deduct 40 - red truck deduct 60 - gray pickup ECT . like i said i understand but darn if i find a door @40 lb don't deduct 40# whats the reward for finding it ,but a slap in the face. I will communicate to them soon enough .

I have found the bigger yards, like the yards that are part of a chain of scrapmetal dealers, a lot better than the small guys.
Not knocking the small guys though.

The big yards can't afford to get a bad name, theres nothing in it for them to try & rip off their scrappers.
The only way they can gain something for nothing is to divide your scrap up into more grades than you did. But thats here where we measure in Kgs, not pounds (454 grams).
Thats not possible for you guys where you measure in Lbs.

At the same time, my yard has been 'Adding metal to the numbers'.
Ie, I bring in 6.6 Kg of #2 & 5.6Kg of #3. They dump the #2 on the scale. The display says [6Kg].
Then they dump the #3 on WITHOUT ZEROING the scale & it says [12Kg] & they put down 6Kg #3 on the docket.

If they zeroed the scale between weighs, I'd have gotton 5Kg for the #3. So I technically get paid for almost all of the metal I bring in.

I have seen some dodgy **** at the two other smaller yards I have used, thats why I don't go there.

General consensus seems to be "find another yard". Even if you have to drive farther out to get there. A few years back the yard closest to me, less than 5 miles, started to do some underhanded things. But never a "moisture reduction". Really? That's low.

Anyway, They really, really low-balled us on the prices they paid out. I mean they cut the prices in some cases over half what it used to be. They tried to tell us it was due to some new laws and restrictions placed on them. Only thing was, there were no new laws and restrictions. The yard made it all up. Well, we all stopped going to them. ALL of us. We'd drive 20 miles instead of the 5 and got paid a fair price. This lasted 2 weeks exactly. They almost went under. So, they did an about face, upped their prices and started treating us fairly again. Still took me about 3 months before I went back, but in end they realized they needed us. The scrapper.

But I also gotta say since another yard is not an option, Corys idea ( the donuts ) works wonders!

I have never gotten a reduction

ONE time, i got a "dont do that again" about some tanks, but still got paid full price for them

When I took this old combine in they had the gawl to deduct 50# for wood. ;)

Seems that they should know, since it's their business, how much they can get out of a refrigerator on average, regardless of whatever other materials there happen to be. Armed with this knowledge, they should be able to give you a per lb price, period, without any deductions for individual items or potential items that might be included.

I just posted a video on how e-scrap is processed, if you watch you can see where a dishwasher was thrown onto the conveyer belt. This is generally the way refrigerators and washers are processed.

It just seems to me they are adding fees onto your scrap just like a bank adds fees to your bank account for using your own money. Just another way for them to part you from the real value of the material you worked so hard to bring them.

You are not being petty, you are being smart, and if I were you I would find a different yard to do business with.

Talk to the owner. You have brought in how many pounds of stuff over the past few years? Find out how to process the stuff without a deduction. Can you cut up the fridges and then they take them even with the plastic on them? Could be that when they see an intact fridge it is a 50 lb deduction. If not find out what needs to be separated and sell it that way. I put all kinds of small items inside fridges, dishwashers and microwaves to compact the load and save on storage space! Do they deduct for any other plastic or wood items on things or just appliances? And donuts or bottled water for the yard staff may help!

You noted a $11.46 deduction thats like 140 pounds of stuff!? WTF!

If a yard was screwing me like that, they'd be lucky to get week old doughnuts. I'm normally all about the doughnut/soda/pizza thing, but in this case, I don't think the yard would care. As others said..find another yard, if thats not an option..open one. lol. Surely there is another yard within a couple hours. Eat the gas loss, your already doing it with the deductions. Hell might make out better, with the way they are treating you.

I don't play the "Your the close yard/store/etc, so I'll suck it up and let you keep stealing/insulting/treating me poorly" game. I don't like your service I go elsewhere. Life is to short to put up with such BS. My time, money, and how I'm treated count with me. Which is why I don't use certain stores ( Bite me Goodwill) or yards. When you allow them to walk all over you, don't be surprised when you find boot tracks up your backside.

Some say grow thick skin, or eat your loss..I say to hell with that, and take your services and business elsewhere, and spread the word. Time for companies to realize..they need you as much as you need them. Whether its a scrap yard, big box store, or a thrift store.

Thats my 0.02 on the matter, and no you can't have a refund. :p

Definitely sounds like they're taking advantage of you, hardcore. To be honest though, up here moisture deductions are pretty typical in winter. I once took my 7x16' dump trailer over the scales after about 6" of snow overnight. Was almost 200 lbs. of snow. As for those other "deductions", yeah you're getting hosed.

the yard closest to me that already pays lower across the board also has a new sign up they take another 5 cents off cans for dirt/water. well, I realized they also were taking it off ALL aluminum I took in, I didn't notice it until I was in my truck double checking my ticket.

I mean, they already can rook folks being they are the only ones around this area but come on!

needless to say I no longer take any aluminum to them.

ETA: And no, its not petty of you - you worked to get the item, you should get money for it at some level above ''zero''

No, you are not petty. Can you find another yard maybe? Keep in mind, they need your business so don't be afraid to speak up for something you consider fair.

Most of the yards near me "reserve the right" to use a moisture reduction on cans of 10%. If the cans are flattened, they rarely use this "right", they will if you turn in full cans with a swamp soup of beer and soda at the bottom of the bag. They will also give you a deduction on cars for the tires (a few pounds for each tire). That's about it.

Rather than a deduction, the yard I use for non-ferrous will actually just take a few pounds off items and give me a clean price on a lot of dirty items. For example, the guy at the scale will take off a pound or two on a car radiator that has plastic on it and give me the clean radiator price rather then force me to "clean" the radiator. I've done it both ways and he is pretty much right on. It saves me a lot of time and certainly is a large incentive to use their yard.

The whole point of having "clean" and "unclean" steel is that the drop in price accounts for the excess materials that could be plastic, insulation, ect... I don't think you are being petty, I think you are being cheated, I'd find another yard or stick to ewaste.

My yard does deductions. Mainly they are for dirt though. We ran into the problem where people were "adding" a scoop or two of dirt with their loaders before they shipped us a 35 yard rolloff of scrap. Being that a cubic yard of dirt weighs about a ton, it doesn't take much to add up. We also have to pay to get rid of the dirt (my yard ships thousands of tons of dirt a year). Therefore we have to do the occasional deduction or we would be getting screwed.

However, I think that doing deducts for insulation and such is egregious and nit-picky. There is 15% "fluff" built into the price of shred when it is sent to shredders or mills.

This video is humbling cause as big as my yard claims to be if they had that system they would have the apatite for all items . It also show how valuable even a coffee maker is . No the yard I deal only wants cherries these days & now it's very clear for sure the yard I deal with pulls shenanigans now and then also the yard men are trying to look good , and also like to look like there doing a good job. There might be many factors like making quota as some days the yard is out for blood & other days they are mellow
this yard can have 200 or more drop offs a day, so to pull $10 from 100 is $1000 @ 7 days $7000 X 4.2 = $29,400 per month so easy to see the incentive, Well matters not I have no other choices.
