New use for CRT Glass

I was searching around attempting to find the best way to get rid of CRTs, other than taking them to the hazardous waste site in my county, and came across https://www.fireclaytile.com/crt/ where apparently they are making tiles from recycled CRT glass. They had a kickstarter campaign a couple of years ago, and you can request free samples of their tiles. I requested a sample to see what they are like and I am thinking of doing a tile back splash in my kitchen with them if I like what I see when the samples show up. I don't know if they will take CRT from individuals or businesses, or if there is just such a huge stockpile out there that they have all that they need. I have emailed them and I am waiting to hear back about it.

This is a cool idea, but at 32-64.00 per square foot, I cannot imagine anyone using much of it.

I have to wonder about the lead in the glass...how does that get removed?

and yeah, $32-64/sq ft....I can do my backsplash in granite for those $$$. Unless they can get the cost down SIGNIFICANTLY and I can see how the lead is being removed, this is a non starter...IMO

On the bottom of that page there is an illustration showing their process. I don't think any of the bad stuff is removed. It is just remolded and contained within. Personally, i think it is pretty cool and has a great look. I'd buy it if I was one of those people with a 60k kitchen remodel budget. That's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Prices are about that for tile here - leaded class has some interesting qualities that make it usable as is. I sent them an inquiry and waiting to hear back. Might be an interesting avenue.

At those prices, they've priced themselves out of a lot of the market. If they can get the costs down to the level where I can buy their tiles at the Home Depot, they'll do very well.

You would think that when they could charge people to take the glass that the final product wouldn't be very expensive.

If it's sealed then it shouldn't be that bad. I got off the phone with them just a few ago and they said they do not accept tubes or any size or shape so i'm guessing they have a stock pile of their own to draw from.

What is going to happen to the leaded tile, 20 years and 3 owners down the road, when the kitchen or the bathroom gets remodeled or the house gets torn down? In my opinion this is just delaying and pushing the problem down the road.

I was also thinking about the lead in the glass and how it would be a liability having anything to do with such tiles. It would become like the asbestos scares and such. Great way to get people to remodel.

Another BIG problem is that the powers that be DON'T like people having any lead shielding that might make them "blind". The main reason they got rid of the leaded gasoline and the leaded paints and such is that it messes with the imaging from the skies and elsewhere. Getting rid of the leaded items was nothing to do with health issues, unless your talking the health of the filthy filthy rich.

They are so filthy rich that we can't see them through all the dirt that hides them from the public view and thought.

It is hard to GUESS what is up when you have such great deceptions between the sheep and their masters.

I prefer being a goat as I enjoy chewing the labels off tin cans & climbing on top of old cars and stomping my foot and pretending that I AM the goat god of all I view and then some...

True but the same could be said about asbestos tile. The house i'm living in has exterior tiles made out of it an it's harmless until it's broken. If the tiles are sealed properly it shouldn't be a problem. Worse comes to worse ya use the tile to line yourself a bunker.

I guess, let's cross our fingers and hope if anyone ever has to tear down the house they don't break any of the tiles and they dispose of them properly. There is another company, in Spain I believe, that is smelting the glass to remove almost all of the lead. Then they make tiles out of the glass after smelting, rendering the glass 99% lead free. In my opinion the above mentioned company is taking short cuts and sooner or later the lead will have to be dealt with.

Shouldn't be that bad , do you realize glass is a slow moving liquid ? It also can be broken easily and could be ingested by your loved ones . Check out the link I posted . There are no good uses as is for this materiel . Not back fill not back splashes not fish tanks .

I have wondered about the so called crystal leaded glass and if it was much the same as the CRT's. I didn't look at the link above and I have never tried to research the subject as it didn't interest me enough to do so as I have little interest in crystal and I figured that if they were much the same and that there was a market that there must be some BIG reason that there isn't more talk of it. It seems like a "dark alley" of some sort that is best left alone.

As for having leaded tiles and such. I have no problem with it for use as shielding and such as there is a market for it. The down side I see is when the "Governments" decide that it's like "certain sporting items" that can't be owned by the regular Joe anymore and you must turn what you have in or face the firing squad of the blind lady of just us with adjustable scales.

The difference here is that when the shingles were put on your house, they didn't know the danger. We all know leaded glass (according to the powers to be) is a regulated material and potentially hazardous when not handled or disposed of properly. This is just kicking the can down the road. Look at what contractors have to do now when renovating or painting a house. Have to contain the lead and dispose of it properly. Gets expensive.

The only thing those tiles are good for is a fallout shelter. (My opinion)
Let's face it, CRTs one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, is one of the biggest nightmares of this century.
Hopefully, one day they will figure out a useful, economic, and safe way of Recycling them.

I don't think I'd want any of these tiles in my house.

Prior threads mention some use of CRT material on landfills ("Alternate Daily Cover"), which I thought was weird, at least no my non-technical / scientific mind. I should read more about it to get a better understanding. There are a few companies that are (or were) separating lead from glass and reusing / reselling those individual components.

A few companies involved in either of these (separation/refining or ADC) are: ECS Refining, Nulife Glass, and Kuusakoski Recycling.

Scary numbers regarding the amount of material sitting around (and God only knows what's sitting underground and/or in the oceans already).

I agree with junkfreak - hope a safe, viable option comes along in the (near) future.

As I read over the last few posts it made me think of and wonder about, what happened with all the "cop killer bullets"/cheap Chinese ammo that ended up sitting on docks and such as it became illegal because of it's construction.

I have a older Air Force publication that has pictures of one of those huge cargo planes being loaded with shrink wrapped pallets of new $100.00 bills.

What was the "trade" that the Chinese were trading?

I bring all this up as I believe that the leaded glass thing is mostly a scam by those that run things from their secret places.

There are MANY such "concepts" that have been revealed at a latter TIME when most people don't really care as they realize that they can do nothing about it but deal with it.

The problem is that most just ignore the facts and proof that gets in the way of what they would like to TRY and believe.

Those that "run things" view those under them as cattle. Even the proof of that is easy to find.

The Department of HUMAN resources is one example. Look up what the word resources means, and we already know what a human is.

I will sometimes think of the old photos I have seen of young Navy personal sitting and watching the TESTS that we now know are not the best things to be around.

I have been spending some of my time looking around the site and seeing what I find that's interesting.

This is a old thread that has some entertaining reading and great information.

I did do a little research on crystal glass and it is made with lead oxide which is made from good ol lead.

From research I did in the past on CRT"s. The front glass is very pure quality glass that is welded/glued to the tube that is leaded glass.
It seems that a special machine that is expensive is required to separate the glass.

I have a couple of broken CRT tubes put away that I figured I could see if the glass could be separated into three groups. The all front glass pieces, the middle section that would have bits of both glass types as well as the weld and the leaded glass pieces.

Not interested to mess with such projects at the time, but it is another thing on my list of many things that I can do for distraction and entertainment.
